So g-friends, how was your yule?

Miss Aimz rocked it with her fam and I headed to Salzburg, Austria where I indulged in a whole lot o’ Sound o’ Music fabulousness, mistletoe kisses with leather-pant wearing Austrian boys, dee-lish hot chocolate drinking, apres-ski,  apple strudels – it was dee-vine! Will share the Austria love with you via pix as soon as I’ve uploaded them, but now I’m back, I’m prepping for a new decade – wowzers – when did that happen?

But before we roll out all of the 2010 goodness, we need to celebrate the end o’ 2009 so we’ve asked some of our favourite ladies to share their 2009 Lists o’ Love… Today we’re kicking off with the too-cool-for-school zine queens Miss Kandy Diamond and Miss Seleena Laverne Daye, creator-girls of the fabulous Sugarpaperzine (issue 4 available NOW! Go buy it!)

Miss Seleena 2009 List o’ Love – she’s the one with the red hair and cute cardi btw!

Book: I’ve been enjoying older stuff this year like Jonathan Coe and B S Johnson, rediscovering old favourites, but I did get all consumed with The Twilight Saga! I loved Twilight and New Moon, but was sorely disappointed with Breaking Dawn, all in all, they were still my books of ‘09!
City you visited: Portland. Dream come true, I could totally live there.
Event you attended: Midnight screening of New Moon, got over excited made top trumps and vegan gingerbread. Going to the cinema at that time is a little too exciting!
Highlight of the year: Going on a trip of a lifetime, my one month American west coast road trip, visiting the places all my favourite bands come from, amazing!
Movie: I enjoyed seeing Robocop at a cinema in Portland for $3, but I haven’t been to see much else. New Moon – I see a pattern here!
Album: I have been rubbish this year and bought like 3 albums, the one I have listened to most has to be  Brand New Eyes by Paramore.
Quote: probably something form the Twilight DVD commentary (I’m not obsessed, honest.)
    Website: shameless plug: http://sugarpapergang.blogspot.com/
Make-up brand: Collection 2000, purely for their glitter eyeliners, a must for all Kenickie fans!
Etsy shop: Bunny Bissoux  – http://www.etsy.com/shop/bunnybissoux
Sad event of the year: the end of Mika Miko, boooooooo!

Event you attended: Errrrr, Mika Miko gig/s.

The idea of drawing pictures for a living fills me with total glee, but that would involve me actually being able to draw – boo – so instead, I like to indulge in the creativity of kick-ass, talented g-friends like Gemma Correll. Not only is she beyond clever with a felt-tip pen, she also shares my total love for pug dogs, in fact her tote bag is on my 12 gifts o’ Christmas list – j’adore.

Fellow Sassy Minxes, please join Miss Lisa and I as we smudge our eyeliner and smoulder, in homage to one of Britain’s multi-talented creatives, Pearl Lowe.

Pearl was the vocalist of Brit Pop bands Powder and Lodger in the nineties, is renowned for being the Queen of Lace – her homewares and dresses adorn Rock and Roll royalty and has been collaborating with Peacocks on a high street line of dee-lish prodz. She’s a mother of four, a writer, an ambassador for Action On Addiction, was a singer in the Britpop bands Powder and Ledger (as well as being wife to Mr Danny ‘Supergrass’ Goffey), and was briefly the face of Agent Provocateur – phew! With all this going on, it was great to be able to catch up with Pearl and talk to her about her collaboration with luxe lingerie label, Yes Master

My first Jessica Adams book, Cool For Cats, was bought for me by my boyf at the time, and while he has since been banished to ex-boyfriend-ville, Jessica and her books have remained a much-loved constant in my world.

Jessica is not just a kick-ass author, she’s the astrologer for Vogue and Cosmopolitan – I know: cool, right? She’s got two homes, one in Brighton and one in Australia – yep, I’m envy-green too and her new book, Shall I Stay is her best book, s’far. According to me, obv.

    The Shall I Stay blurb:
When Alice met Nash, she fell head over heels. Two years later, she can’t quite remember what it was that had seemed so brilliant about him. All they do is argue – especially about money. In a last-ditch attempt to save their relationship, they agree to leave rainy England behind and emigrate to Australia. But when Alice finds out that Nash has been unfaithful, their plans are ruined and she decides to go to Australia alone.

Packing what she can into four suitcases, she heads to Bondi to stay with her cousin. Australia is a very strange place where everything seems upside down and anything over two syllables is abbreviated. Will Alice ever be able to lose her English inhibitions and relax into the Aussie way of life? Can she ever find a proper job? And, more importantly, will she be able to control herself around Joel, her extremely attractive Australian cousin?

Ohh, I love me a vintage ensemble,  pretty, pretty clothes with history – j’adore.

If you, like me, are retro-hearted, then you will dig www.retrochick.co.uk – a swoony-swoon site that helps you discover your own personal style by finding the best in affordable vintage, and ethical fashion and making it work everyday. I’m a total fan-girl and love, love, love creator-girl, Miss Gemma Seager, mainly because she believes in the following:

    • Fashion doesn’t have to cost the earth, in any sense
    • Style never goes out of fashion
    • There isn’t much that can’t be made better by a nice cup of tea
    • If you’re nice to people they’ll be nice back.

You love her too now, right?

It’s National Chocolate Week – hurrah! And I for one, feel it’s a week absolutely worth celebrating. Being a Sassy Minx, I confess to occasionally eating a little bit for breakfast, or mixed with a splash of vodka in a cocktail. If I’m completely honest, I probably celebrate this week nearly everyday.

So go and grab a bit of something sweet – it is a Monday after all – and join in the celebrations! I’m all for believing that a bit of something you fancy, does you good….

Today is National Poetry day and to celebrate I’d love to share my favourite poem of all time with you, it’s called Phenomenal Woman and it’s by poet, author, activist, producer, actor, director and inspir-o girl, Maya Angelou. I have this poem hanging in the boudoir of the Pink Palace – buy yours here – so that it’s the first thing I read every morning and the last thing I read at night – I love it, hope you do too…

    Phenomenal Woman

Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I’m not cute or built to suit a fashion model’s size
But when I start to tell them,
    They think I’m telling lies.
    I say,
It’s in the reach of my arms
    The span of my hips,
    The stride of my step,
    The curl of my lips.
    I’m a woman
    Phenomenally.
    Phenomenal woman,
    That’s me.

    I walk into a room
Just as cool as you please,
    And to a man,
    The fellows stand or
    Fall down on their knees.
    Then they swarm around me,
    A hive of honey bees.
    I say,
It’s the fire in my eyes,
And the flash of my teeth,
    The swing in my waist,
And the joy in my feet.
    I’m a woman
    Phenomenally.
    Phenomenal woman,
    That’s me.

    Men themselves have wondered
    What they see in me.
    They try so much
    But they can’t touch
    My inner mystery.
When I try to show them
They say they still can’t see.
    I say,
It’s in the arch of my back,
    The sun of my smile,
    The ride of my breasts,
    The grace of my style.
    I’m a woman

    Phenomenally.
    Phenomenal woman,
    That’s me.

    Now you understand
Just why my head’s not bowed.
I don’t shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud.
    When you see me passing
It ought to make you proud.
    I say,
It’s in the click of my heels,
    The bend of my hair,
    the palm of my hand,
    The need of my care,
    ‘Cause I’m a woman
    Phenomenally.
    Phenomenal woman,
    That’s me.
