If you’re a woman who lusts after bargains (and, uh, other things), who wants the high life even when your bank balance is low, who likes to eat well and look amazing without the guilty conscience – well, Bitches on a Budget is for you.Seriously, I LOVE this book. It’s for minxes like us, who know what we want but don’t want to pay the earth for it. Author-girl, Roz Hoffman is officially my new recession era fashion guru, travel agent, grooming consultant, therapist, sommelier and life coach all rolled into one – come meet her, read about her awesomeness, then buy the book – in that order.
Describe yourself in 5 words, Roz…
Wicked, witty, wise, green (not with envy) and hungry (for good food at all times)Bitches on a Budget – what’s it about exactly?!
‘Budget is Not a Dirty Word’
Fiscal responsibility is like monogamy… if you think it’s boring, you’re doing it wrong. Since when has budget been a dirty word? After all, we’re not talking chastity belts, abstinence rings, knee-jerk denial. Think of budget as just another way to say edit. The key to good living is in using your limited resources wisely– we’ll show you how to hitch your mind to that little lust engine that’s driving you. The end result? You’ll make smarter shopping decisions. Bargain buys will replace designer labels as your new badge of honor. Besides, since you want to be a good green citizen of the world, it’s time to stop consuming everything in your path.‘Be a Bitch, Bitch’
Bitch isn’t a bad word, either. We’re proud to be modern women. Women who know what we want and aren’t afraid to get it; women with the sense to edit the good from the bad; women who choose to live with style and with conscience. Independent women who say what they think, are in touch with our femininity, and know how to enjoy our pleasures. Hell we make less than men do by the hour, work harder and produce more value (just think about it, can they have babies?). It’s time to stand proud, Bitch.
What made you want to write Bitches on a Budget?
I knew we were headed for a meltdown—had no idea it would be as big as it was or I would have sold ALL my stocks—and knew there would be 1,000,001 books about penny pinching, coupon clipping, chest pounding fiscal responsibility and saving. I thought it would be way more helpful (and fun) to write about how you live well no matter what the state of your pocketbook.
How was the book writing process for you? How did it go from an idea in your head to a real life book?
An idea, an outline, a pitch, an agent, a publisher happened like greased lightening- it was magic. Then I had to write the book. I took myself away and worked solid. Morning, noon and night for six months and voila—The Bitches. What makes you jump in the air happy?
Seeing the people around me that I love happy. GREAT FOOD. And of course, a killer bargain (Clergerie, Comme des Garcon, Jil Sander, Miu Miu- 75% off).
What five tunes would be on a Bitches’ soundtrack to life?
Anything by Janis Joplin and Sade; Jeff Buckley – Hallelujah, Beethoven’s 6th -The Pastorale, The Doors – Light My Fire, Lou Reed- Take a Walk on the Wild Side. What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?
Don’t wait. Do it now. What’s the best lesson?
Trust your instincts and never make decisions out of fear. Take risks, if things don’t work out– take the time to stop figure out what and why things went wrong. Then move on. Be honest with yourself.
What’s your motto for life?
Life is short, live well, be kind.
