While this is an actual real life fact – c’mon, seriously, who doesn’t? It’s also the title of this summer’s Sassy Minx must-read book, written by the awesome talent that is Miss Lindsey Kelk – she’s my editor, my gorgeous gal-pal and now my most favourite author.

I heart Lindsey.  You would too if you met her. She’s funny, owns pretty, pretty shoes and is quite possibly the best person to eat minstrels and watch Gossip Girl with, and now she’s gone and written this beyond fabulous book that’s THE book to buy if, a) you’ve ever been wronged by boykind, b) you love NYC, c) you like HOT boys.

Miss Lindsey is fabulous x 100. Come meet her, then go buy her book, I Heart New York - £6.99 – dem the rules.

Describe Miss Lindsey in 5 words…
Right now? Too hot, too tired, bleurgh. But usually, I’d pitch for funny, hopeful, nosey, sarcastic and well-dressed. Always well-dressed…

We heart I heart New York x approximately 10000000000000, for those who haven’t read it yet, what’s it about?

YAY! I Heart New York is about a girl called Angela who finds out her boyfriend has been cheating on her (when she finds him at it in the back of their car at her best friend’s wedding) and so, with no one else to turn to, she flees to New York where she meets some new friends, some new boys and some new shops. New York is brilliant and her new life is so much fun (especially the dating two very hot boys part) but soon Angela realizes that you can’t hide from your problems forever. More’s the pity… Will she stay in New York or will she head back to London? Oooh, I’m not telling.

You’re an ed-girl and an author, how do you find the time to do both?

Mew, I really don’t know. I’m going out of my mind at the moment, promoting I Heart New York, editing I Heart Hollywood and writing I Heart Paris – argh! I suppose it’s really all down to discipline which I really don’t have. Actually, put that in the words to describe me. Appallingly ill-disciplined.

I am crushing on Alex, hard. Do you have a penchant for the muso-boys, Miss Kelk?
Erm, yes. But they do not have a penchant for Miss Kelk. Which is a DAMN shame. For them.

Tell us about your writing routine Miss Lindsey?
For some reason, I write best at night, after eight preferably. I write in the living room of my lovely, lovely flat with loud music, Diet Pepsi and snacks. The music isn’t too loud but since the wannabe house DJ moved in next door, I don’t worry about it too much anyway.

What tracks would be on a I Heart New York soundtrack?
Ooh, I was listening to loads of stuff while I was writing. Definitely The Pains of Being Pure at Heart (speaking of guitar boy crushes…), stellastarr* (how Angela and Jenny got their names), Vampire Weekend, Interpol, The Strokes, Bishop Allen, Blondie and The Thermals – who aren’t from New York but I saw them play there while I was writing I Heart New York and in my head, that’s the gig Angela and Alex go to on their first date.

If they made a movie of I Heart New York, which I really, really hope they do, who would you want to play Angela?
Now I know I don’t have a lot of acting experience… hmm, no, erm, Emily Blunt? She’s ace.

We’ve got ONE day in NYC, what are the things we simply HAVE to do and see?
Well the first thing you have to do is book a flight back in a month because it’s not possible to do it in a day! But if you had to, I would probably tell you to get on one of the tour buses that everyone who’s too cool tells you not to. It’s the best way to see all the sights quickly and easily. If you’re not after sights so much as shopping I would say… start with breakfast at Manatus or the Cornelia Street café in The Village and then do some shopping down there – make sure you leave room for Magnolia Bakery cupcakes. Then head uptown to Bergdorfs, Barneys and Bloomingdales and at the end of the day, pop down to Soho, pick up any shops you’ve missed and hit Balthazar for dinner. YUM.

How did you make I Heart New York go from an idea in your head to a real on-the-shelves book?
It’s still a mystery to me to be honest… really it’s just down to never giving up. I sent the manuscript out to a million agents, nearly all of whom turned it down and when I did finally get an agent, she actually hated I Heart New York and wanted me to start from scratch. After that, I asked everyone I’d ever met for advice and luckily, one of them passed the manuscript on to my publisher and they loved it! So it was half luck, half perseverance.

You heart NY so much you’re actually moving there – in a month’s time! What are you looking forward to the most about being a NYC resident?
Oh, I don’t know! I’m SO excited. I’ve already got tickets to a couple of gigs and there’s a club night, Mondo, that I’m really looking forward to. Can’t wait to spend more time with my New York friends either, I love them. Really it’s everything about the city – it just makes me feel alive, like I can do anything.

    What’s your life motto?
I never really thought about it but I’d like to think that it would be ‘it’s better to regret something you’ve done rather than something you haven’t’. I spent too many years worrying about things that might never happen, now I try and make the most of every opportunity.

    What are your 5 must-have, can’t-live-without items?

    • My BlackBerry would definitely be one of them because it means I can keep in touch with everyone, take pics and check Facebook (which I do obsessively).
    • My iPod is an absolute must because I can’t bear to be without music. I’m not a muso or anything but I do freak out if I haven’t got music with me. The town in Footloose is my idea of hell… I need to know that dancing is always an option. It’s also got all my photos on so I can have a nostalgia fest at any moment or pimp my friends out to each other in the style of ‘look at him here! Yes, I know he’s wearing a Ghostbuster’s costume but I think he’s perfect for you!’ I’m not a good matchmaker but I try.
    • Marc Jacobs clock pendant. I’m never, ever without it and it has handily sparked up several useful conversations! Always try and have a conversation starter about your person, makes life easier.
    • Contact lenses. I’m blind as a bat and I’m vain, okay? I’ve dealt with it, please don’t hold it against me.
    • Friends – I have to have at least two of them within chocolate throwing distance at all times.

Quick fire round: What’s your favourite:
    Colour: Sky blue.
City: London and New York – can’t choose!
Hang out: Anywhere my friends are (but I like them best when they’re at The Diner off Carnaby Street)
Shop: Beyond Retro on Great Marlborough Street , London. I’m a vintage junkie at the moment.
Website: Ebay – I’m a shocker for impulse auctions.
Magazine: I buy all of them! Probably Look.
Book: The Secret History by Donna Tart.
TV programme: Right now, Gossip Girl.
Book that you’ve edited: Why, any of the Lola Love titles, of course… I’m so proud to be involved with Lola.

What’s next in the world o’ author-girl Miss Kelk?
Well, it’s all about the big move right now! I’m moving to Williamsburg to try and hunt down an Alex in August but I’m also hard at work on I Heart Paris and trying to hold down my full time job. Oh, and I’m spending far too much time trying to work out what to wear with my red sequin hotpants to my leaving party… Life is tough.
