I heart the Piperita Patties. If you love your music in a kitsch, girl-shaped, day-glo fabulous Italian-o package, then you will most deffo heart them too.

Forget those pesky Pussycat Dolls – The Piperita Patties are a girl band you can really dig. Their music is bubblecore pop’n’roll with a powerful twist – what could be cooler than that?

    Answer? Nothing.

Sassy Minx adores the Piperita Patties. Fact. Tell the world about yourselves, gorgeous girls…
MariLu: I’m a perennial teenager and an icon wannabe, no matter what they think no matter what they say. I’m wearing my earphones 24/7 listening to powerpop bands and yè yè girls. I adore being manicured, shopping and aerobics. I’m addicted to tv series and my style icons are Hello Kitty and Pinky Tuscadero. The Kanker Sisters are my gurus and true friendship is what matters most in life to me.

Sassy, edgy style and true friendship are the basic ingredients of the freshly baked cupcake that our band is! I met Louie at a punk rock concert and she was so cute and sweet that I told her right away that she was the guitar girl I’ve always dreamt of for my ideal band…The Piperita Patties were born.

Louie: We love cookies, slumber parties, sparkling earrings, cherry flavour lipstick and pink pencil cases for our glittery pens and ideas to be written in our diaries, where we can keep our dreams and think of new songs, gently sipping our strawberry mojito on a hot summer day.. We love the smell of flowers, freshly baked cupcakes and brand new shoes…we just think that life is too short to take a rest, we deserve to enjoy it as much as we can because ‘there is no sin to be glad you’re alive’ (who can guess the song?)…we would love to live in a better world. We’d love to see people stop and smile when hearing our songs…and for a moment, forget the worries of everyday routine and just dance with us.

    l_8f149eecdf99df5de2035c989fd7fc0aSo, what’s with the name?
ML: It’s the Italian translation of Peppermint Patty, the (anti)-heroine from the “Peanuts”. You know, Peppermint in Italian is “Piperita” and the name sounded just great. Well, in a way I kind of decided I had to start a girl band just to use that wonderful name…Peppermint Patty is the quintessential brat, and she’s so cute and totally adorable. But, at the same time, she’s clumsy and often misunderstood, but she doesn’t care, she just lives her own way and never thinks about changing an inch of what she is…She’s got attitude and the “normal”, “sensitive” Charlie Brown simply can’t love her, because she’s too free and “out of joint” and she makes her own rules! She’s great…She’s us.

When did you first discover your love for music?

ML: I grew up with music, actually. My parents were very keen on music and
I grew up with the Beatles and John Coltrane, actually. Seemingly, I didn’t learn too muchJ. Damn! As a teenager I used to live in a sort of symbiosis with a transistor radio and…here I am the way I was… a teenager obsessed with pop music who loves playing and singing and adores spinning records and watching the dancefloor SHAKE!!

L: I’ve stayed entire nights out in the street waiting for concert’s tickets, I’ve waited hours in front of a stadium under the rain.. these are the best memories ever! Then I started playing the guitar. I still have a LOT to learn. But “I’m a rocker, baby I’m a rocker!” and when I met Marilu, The Piperita Patties adventure began!

Is the PPs what you do full time or do you have day jobs too?

ML: Ah ah ah…I’d LOOOVE to be a full time popstar but…unfortunately I still have a “side job”…I teach sociology at university…no joke! By the way, I want to say hello to all my students…and remember, guys…YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE A ROCKSTAR TO FEEL LIKE ONE.

L: I wish I was a full time rockstar! Yeah! Well actually I am ending my studies in Environmental Chemistry. Power pop will stop the climate change, yeah! I’d love to be a full time Piperita. Well we can be Piperita Patties in everyday life. It’s an attitude, we are sooo proud of it!

Describe the PP sound in 5 words…
ML: popcorn bubblegum yè yè cheerleader twist
L: polkadots caramel party beach fun

What would a PP soundtrack sound like?
    ML’s playlist

The Flirts - Nice girls say no & Telephone
    Mina – Eclisse Twist
The Flatmates - Heaven is blue
“Auntie” Cyndi Lauper – Girls just want to have fun
Conchita Velasco – La chica yè yè

    Louie’s playlist

    Titti Bianchi – Maga Magò
    Blondie – Sunday Girl
The Little Girls – Earthquake Song
The Piperita Patties – All my friends are girls
The Ohio Express – Yummy Yummy Yummy (and all the covers made since then!)

What and who rocks your world?
ML: Italian food and Brit style are an orgasmic combination!
L: The other Piperita Patties, online cool shops, and rock concerts!

    What’s your motto for life?
ML: Girls just want to have fun…So 80s, so true!
L: Goonies Never Say Die…So 80s, so good!

l_d7f0edb2e154b646d4a91dbf2e2fd607Do you think you’ll be rocking out forever?

ML: Well, rockin’out is not only about your lifestyle, it’s much deeper, it’s about the way you are, the way you see and feel the world…so…yes…because “if you were born round you won’t die square”…it’s an Italian byword…it means that yes, I’m rockin’ out forever.
L: Yes! Even when I’m 80 I will dye my white hair pink and play the guitar! I’ll be a rockin’ granny! And I will still have slumber parties, baking cupcakes and cookies for everyone taking part!

What’s the best thing that’s happened to you because of being in the PPs?

ML: The PPs themselves are the best thing and, secondly, seeing a band of teenage girls coverizing a song of ours, ‘All My Friend Are Girls’. It was like…wow, that’s crazy! We’re famous!! We’re icons!! Wow! It’s so touching, isn’t it?

L: I found a lot more self-confidence that I’d ever experienced before. Playing on a stage and singing helps a lot. And of course, being with friends who always encourage you, like the Piperita Patties. I love them all. And of course, the All my Friends are Girls cover…that was amazing!

    Quick-fire round: What’s your favourite…
Film: ML: Desperately Seeking Susan L: The Goonies stays in my heart.
Book: ML: To the Lighthouse (V. Woolf) L: The Catcher in The Rye (J.D.Salinger)
City: ML: New York L: Granada (Spain)
Music: ML: Powerpop L: rockpoppowerpopgaragepop and classical together with sounds of nature…to relax..
Food: ML: Arancini di riso (Rice balls) and “parmigiana di melanzane” (aubergines’ parmigiana L: Pizza definitely! And my grandma’s apple cake.

What’s next in the world of the PP? PLEASE say you’re comin’ to the UK!!

ML: Well…you know, the PP are made of dreams, so…a full-length album, Patricia Field as personal shopper and…an amazing UK tour…Well, I HEART UK…I would swap pizza for crumpets any minute…If I had the chance I’d do it in a flash!
L: I wouldn’t swap pizza for crumpets, ahahah…but yes I agree on the personal shopper, I would add a Piperita-Patty clothes brand and lots of concerts around UK, and Japan? We’d love it. Well, dreaming is accessible to all, isn’t it?
