-1I’m a newbie astro-girl. For sure, I’ve read a gazillion books, I’m addicted to the David Wells forecast in Spirit and Destiny magazine and I’m currently on an astrology course that frazzles my brain with talk of sextiles and sesquiquadrates, but no one makes astrology more fun and accessible than the ever-so funny and – sssh, don’t tell him – ever-so hot, US-based astrologer, Matthew Currie.

Matthew has been a pro astro-boy and counselor for 20 years, with numerous appearances on television and radio. He writes The Daily Sky at Sasstrology.com, blogs the Clueless About Dating at Astrology.com, and writes his own blog matthewastrology.blogspot.com As if that didn’t keep him busy enough, he’s author of a beyond fabulous e-book series, and host consultations with people across the world – I’ve got one this afternoon, I’m all kinds of excited about it! Come meet him, he’s awesome. Fact.

Matthew, what is it you do exactly?

It’s not as much like the classic “fortune teller” cliches that a lot of people picture. I’m like a regular counselor, except that by looking at a person’s date, time and place of birth — the “birth chart” — I can tell you what happened in the past and what’s coming in the future too.

How did you discover astrology – did you find it, or did it find you?

My Dad was a complete skeptic about everything, and my Mom ran around behind his back reading tea leaves. She tossed me a copy of a book called “The Complete Astrologer” (yes that’s how it’s spelled) when I was about six years old, telling me there was “too much math” involved. From that point on, there was no looking back.

What were you doing before you were an astrologer and how did you make the transition?

I was (and am) a trained counselor with an educational background in psychology. The transition was almost seamless in some ways. Basically, as a counselor, I just got tired of not telling people everything that I could with a birth chart. Big increase in effectiveness… big cut in pay!

So, Matthew what does an astrologer actually do, if I came to you for a reading what would it involve?

We could spend all day going over what the future holds in detail… but I prefer answering specific questions about specific things: love and money usually. Well, love always comes into the picture somehow, it seems.

Is our astrology chart our destiny?
It is and it isn’t. I usually compare it to the hand you’re dealt in poker: well played, you can win with bad card; mess up and you can lose with a royal flush. It’s as much a part of you (and as much of an excuse) as your childhood, appearance, income, DNA…

How does astrology help us know ourselves better?
It’s tremendously useful for that. By helping to understand your basic operating principles, astrology can help you understand everyone and everything you relate to at least a little better. And understanding someone else’s birth chart is like knowing half the cheat codes in a video game — it gives you a huge advantage.

You’ve written a series of e-books – not only are they about astrology which I love, they’re also very funny too – who are they for and what are they about?
I wrote my books because I didn’t see any readable, accurate, and entertaining guides to help people get to the next step with astrology beyond simply knowing your own Sun Sign. And I wrote with an emphasis on both self-understanding and understanding others — particularly in terms of romantic relationships — because, frankly, that’s what everyone is interested in. How can you help this Scorpio sassy sorceress with love and seduction, Mister Matt?
You? Need help with love and seduction? Unthinkable!

Seriously: your own birth chart is an excellent example of how useful a deeper knowledge of astrology can be. You know what goes with having Sun in Scorpio, but you personally also have Moon in Sagittarius. The Moon Sign is every bit as important as the Sun for emotional matters. In your case, Sagittarius makes you more cheerful and outgoing than a stereotypical “Scorpio.” If someone were contemplating asking you out and knew this about you, it would be a lot more accurate than the usual “she’s a Scorpio and I’m an Aquarius, so we aren’t going to get along” sort of thing.

I am a HUGE fan of your work on Sasstrology and Astrology.com too – is there anything you don’t do? How did you get involved in that?
Thank you. Actually, I don’t do windows. Okay, I do, but I charge extra for that. As for the writing… I just sat down and did it, and kept doing it, and eventually got attention for it, and it all sort of fell into place. Not terribly helpful sounding advice to the average aspiring writers out there… but still sound: write, and keep writing, and stop just thinking about it.

What would your advice be to astrology newbies?

Read and observe. You’ll soon develop a sense for which writers know what they’re talking about and which ones don’t. And I also recommend a student do the birth charts of the people they know and observe them. A lot of astrological wisdom isn’t in the books.

What’s next for Matthew Currie – apart from counting down the days ’til my visit ‘to San Fran – care to share?
I keep writing, doing consultations with people all over the world, and trying to pay the bills here in the Strangest Yet Greatest City On Earth. Oh, and I’m trying to promote a book. Did I mention that? People say it’s really good!
