I Wanna Be Adored

I take props from the gorgeously glam girls of yester-year on a daily basis – Marilyn, Elizabeth, Joan, Audrey, Jayne – they’re my inspir-o-girls, because damn it, those girls knew what being sassy was really about, and if you don’t believe me, just ask international authority on fashion history, Caroline Cox author of the beyond bee-you-tiful book How to Be Adored: A Girl’s Guide to Hollywood Glamour.
This book is not only really pretty to look at – it’s got a luxe pink cover that positively screams to be stroked – it delves deep into the heart of Hollywood Glamour, past and present, to bring us girls o’ the Naughties a must-have collection of untold secrets from some of the world’s most seductive women.
Joan Crawford’s tips for perfect lips, the story behind Audrey Hepburn’s ballet flats, Jewellery tips from Doris Day, how to wear a beret like Greta Garbo, how to descend a staircase like Sophia Loren – it’s so much more than a fashion and style guide, it’s a retro roadtrip to the days when glamour was about much, much more than putting on a pair of heels and and some lipstick. Turning the pages of this book will make you want to slip on a pair of fluffy marabou heels ala Bettie Page and Cyd Charisse, channel Marilyn with a spritz of Chanel No. 5 and make an entrance, just like Elizabeth Taylor, by gliding into work in a floor-skimming black mink coat.
I LOVE Elizabeth Taylor – a cute writer-boy I recently went on a date with actually compared me to Liz in Cleopatra, I know, best compliment EVER, right? – so I particularly love page 182, when Caroline retells the story of Liz’s first day on set of Cleopatra, where she walks past her co-stars Rex Harrison and Richard Burton and stops in front of director Joseph L. Mankiewicz.
“Are you ready my Queen?” he enquired, as he took her small, plump hand and kissed it.
“I was born ready, dear sir,” she replied as she dropped her mink to the floor to reveal a dazzling skin-tight gold beaded gown.
“My dear, you leave me breathless,” swooned Jo.
“Of course I do.” she replied.
I FREAKIN’ LOVE that woman.
I FREAKIN’ LOVE this book too. Not only will it look awful pretty on your book shelf, it’ll help you to become totally adorable thanks to the juicy revelations from Hollywood starlets – who wouldn’t want that? I’m kicking back on my Chaise Lounge, sipping pink fizz and reading my copy right now, can someone direct my Richard Burton to the boudoir when he arrives please? Thanks awfully.
