200479485_85f4341b71On New Years day, Ms Lisa and I,  sat in our pretty PJ’s in a swanky boutique hotel room in Paris and compiled two lists in our art girl notebooks – a gratitude list for 2008 and a wishlist for 2009. We weren’t hungover – I know, how modern? – and we were watching the French dub of Some like it Hot (Merci Marilyn).

    I also wrote a letter.

Call me silly, but I don’t think there’s anything more romantic than receiving a gorgeous handwritten note from the person you love, and as I’m currently romancing myself, it seemed like the perfect thing to do. This is an edited version – it wouldn’t do to give away all of my secrets now, would it? – but you should give it a go, for the whole of January my life became very Hollywood story, and every time I get a life-wobble, I read it and it reminds me of what I deserve and that someone amazing loves me…Me!

    Dear Aimee at nearly 25,

I hope when you read this you remember your plan to ‘keep it real for 09′ – ha.

Your talent and passion will carry you through the year and will help you to sparkle.  I know, and you know, that you can do it really, you just need to focus and be strong.

Now those pesky fellows that distract you so much, being friends and trying to understand these lost boys is not getting you very far. You want the “Prince and the Showgirl” not “Lady and the Tramps”. There is no point trying to bloody enlighten them as they cant even enlighten themselves. For a start, they don’t deserve a: your lingerie b: your nipple tassle/pole dancing skills or c: your intimacy and honesty. When you start being honest with them, and yourself, you’ll get what you want.

I hope you’re not sad, if you are, try not to be. Everything happens for a reason and you’re very lucky you’ve packed so much in, but don’t take things for granted. Keep those friends that care and make you laugh safe, ditch the ones who make you feel insecure and not good about yourself – they don’t deserve you. Sparkle. Be honest, nice and good to yourself.

    Aimee x

I sealed it with a red lipstick kiss. Well, if its good enough for Marilyn…

FYI: The Fabu Miss Sarah at Temporary Secretary wants your love letters!

She’s working on her Final Major Project at university and her concept is inspired by the emotion in love letters and in a generation of facebook and myspace, her aim is to re-promote writing – cute.

Which is where you come in. Sarah wants to get a bunch of lovely handwritten letters and put them together in a book and use them to sculpture a dress together. The result will be exhibited at Graduate Fashion Week at Earls Court in June along with fellow fashion graduates.

  1. Aimee!

Lisa gave me the heads up for this so I have been waiting excitedly for it. Great article, as its exactly what I’m trying to get across to people. I’ve been writing myself love letters since September! (gets depressing at times… would be nice to get a real letter!)

In my dissertation “titled Romance Is Dead”, i discovered that a lot of people have never written or recieved a letter. Those were the same ppl to say “Yes, Romance is dead”. sad. :(

    Get writing everyone!

  2. Hi Missus,

I agree, there is nothing nicer than a proper letter. They are real words that channel from yourself and flow through a page in a time where the internet sells everything out to the extreme.
